This is a wonderful account, John. My own father and uncle are buried in a Veterans Cemetery here in Connecticut. So they always have a formal Memorial Day ceremony there (color guard, gunned salute, taps, missing man overhead, etc.). My mom and I always go up there and decorate their graves. One thing I found interesting was your account of old jelly jars with aluminum foil wrapped around them, because that's exactly what we always do. And flowers picked from my mom's garden, though not necessarily Irises. Thanks for sharing all this. ~John

With winter fast approaching homeowners will rightly be looking at ways to ensure they can keep their property warm through the cold months. A warm home requires an effective combination of central heating and insulation.

John,

The energy efficiency of our homes is a LARGE part of what will make this home affordable for Latisha and her families. So many folks don't consider the "operating" costs of the homes they purchase. .. . . .and Energy Star certification will make Latisha's electric bills a lot easier to handle year round. . . .well if those kids of hers remember to close the doors behind them!! I know they will. .. it is a great family. Thanks for being a part of the process and for your support of Wichita Habitat for Humanity and affordable homeownership !

I'm not attempting to change retrofit in the term DER. I am attempting to describe what it means and what it doesn't mean.

So I started with a bunch of R- words. Rehab, restore, rebuild.

I tend to refer to Home Energy Improvements rather than Home Energy Retrofit.

I agree that HEI should occur anytime you are remodeling, adding on or changing something.

Nice post John & interesting definition. I now have it linked and look forward to seeing whatever everyone else pops up in with.
I got to say I am not a fan of using the words rework, remodel, or restoration - I would probably say it should be left as retrofitting and maybe having just one other version called reduction into the mix when we start talking about programs that add solar, wind or geothermal into the mix. Now with that said, I think this work shoulddefinitelyy take place when any type or remodeling, renovation or restoration work is happening as that is the best & in many cases the cheapest time to do it.

I'd never heard of "Decoration Day" before but it's a nice name for "Memorial Day". I think this is a lovely way of remembering people and I like "flags" for "irises".

I have to say that I've never been one to decorate grave sites or go to graves a lot. I find it very upsetting. My mother-in-law passed last August, and my wife and I visited her grave on Easter. It was very sad for both of us. She was such a wonderful person; I knew her for 35 years. The flowers we took were lilies. That's such a beautiful flower, but when I see them, all I think about is grave sites.
